World’s 3rd Largest Diamond Unearthed

INTERNATIONAL: The African nation of Botswana is displaying one of the world's largest diamonds. The uncut stone is 1,098 carats and is said to be the third largest so-called "gem-quality" diamond ever found. It was presented to Botswana President Mokgweetsi Masisi this week.

The diamond was found at the country’s Jwaneng Mine. The mine is operated by Debswana, a diamond company jointly owned by Botswana's government and the De Beers Group. The Botswana government’s official Twitter account wrote that "proceeds from the diamond will be used to advance national development in the country."

The diamond, which has yet to be named, is the largest stone unearthed by the company since diamonds were first discovered in Botswana in 1967. It is already worth millions of dollars and will be worth even more when it is cut into several smaller diamonds which will be sold to the highest bidder.

The largest gem-quality diamond ever recorded is the 3,106-carat Cullinan Diamond, found in South Africa in 1905. The Cullinan was also cut into smaller stones, many of which form part of Britain’s Crown Jewels. The second largest gem-quality diamond ever discovered is said to be the Lesedi La Rona, a 1,109-carat stone found in 2015 by the Canadian firm Lucara Diamond, also in Botswana. It was sold in 2017 to the luxury jeweler Graff for $53-million.
